Vermont
Teddy Bears
Teddy bears are so much more than
just toys. So ubiquitous are they within the American toy
landscape that they have evolved from a simple doll to an
institution in themselves. Giving or receiving a teddy bear
is America's way of saying, "I care for you." Teddy bears
are traditions that define us as a nation, and we have the
nation's 26th president to thank.
In 1902, while Theodore Roosevelt
was on a hunting trip in Mississippi, his hunting party captured
a young, skinny black bear and tied it to a tree for Roosevelt
to shoot. When presented with this helpless game, Roosevelt
refused. The next day, a Washington Post political cartoonist
illustrated the incident. It showed the President's clemency
as well as his love for wild animals. Understandably, the
nation was moved, and before long "Teddy's bears" showed up
in shopkeepers' windows.
Ever since then, teddy bears have
been created in every shape and style. They have served as
cherished childhood items for millions of Americans for over
a century. As childhood toys, they are put through a lot of
abuse by their owners. It's important to have a teddy bear
that will last, even when pushed and pulled and hugged.
Vermont teddy bears, made by the Vermont
Teddy Bear
Company, are plush toys that are of the highest quality. They
will last much longer than the childish innocence of their
recipients, and that's part of point. Our love for our childhood
toys does not diminish once we reach maturity, and there are
many parents who dream of one day giving their Vermont teddy
bears to their kids.
